I decided to become Deaf at age fourteen years old. I chose this to be Deaf, because I came to realize it was too much to compete to meet the expectation of hearing people: that were, my parents, teachers for the deaf at hearing schools, professionals, students, neighbor kids, and everyone else around me. I understand where you are standing on this.

I came to be flexible with those unintended hearing people finally, when I was in late 30's. I had to come to deal my issues, after meeting such people like those people who wrote in the comments here. It was like the peelings of "my" onion… Now, I use my speech and hearing aids again.

F0r this I know, I will never be hearing!

When I was at school we used to get absolutly slaughtered by the teachers if we called the kids with hearning aids deaf, they were to be called “hearing impared”.

I still use the terms HoH for myself most of the time. I was born with most of my hearing, but it has gone away at a constant rate since then. I didn’t need hearing aids until I was like 25, but now I cannot hear voices at all without them. I didn’t learn ASL until a little over 5 years ago, and now am basically fluent, and I have quite a few Deaf friends, and I am culturally-aware.

I do use the term Deaf for myself when it suits. Examples: when I am swimming, when I am working out, and any other time I cannot use my aids or my batteries are dead.

I’m not sure if I will ever use the term Deaf for myself full-time because I spent the first 25-30 years of my life Hearing. What do you think?

I’m hard of hearing. I’m not deaf because I do have some hearing, albeit, partially deaf. I could call myself deaf and I do sometimes but it does not appropriately describe my type of hearing loss.

Coming from a culturally deaf family, I can assure you the term ‘hard of hearing’ is appropriate for some. If they have enough hearing or are able to hear with the use of hearing aids. I don’t think there’s a clear guideline as to how one can be labeled hoh, but for me, I can hear lots with my hearing aids, can use phone, can speak, etc. ergo, I am hard of hearing.

For some, the term deaf is preferable. For some, hoh fits their type of hearing loss. To each, their own.
